December 2, 2009  |  by Johns Hopkins Staff

Bobby Van Allen is in his 11th year as track and cross country coach at Johns Hopkins University. This season, his women’s cross country team achieved something never done before by a women’s team at Johns Hopkins: a #1 national ranking. At press time, the Jays had just won their second consecutive Centennial Conference championship and were on their way to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. Here are Coach Van Allen’s instructions for assembling a championship team. (Illustrations by Wesley Bedrosian)

  1. I trained with Bobby Van Allen in his first year at Hopkins and made really tremendous improvement under his coaching and leadership. His achievements with the Cross Country and Track teams deserve to be commended. I’m proud to have been a part of his team!
